Getting to Salerno

If driving, the town can be reached via the A3 motorway. Salerno also has a train station with regular connections to other cities such as Naples and Rome. The local bus company, SITA, also offers frequent buses to and from Salerno.

While in Salerno, make sure to visit the Salerno Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Matthew. It is is a beautiful 11th-century church with a stunning facade and an impressive bell tower. You could also go on a stroll along the Lungomare Trieste seafront promenade for beautiful views of the sea and the city. If you want to do something a little outside the box, you can visit the Salerno Medical School, one of the oldest in Europe and home to a fascinating collection of medical instruments and documents.

You could also go up to the Castello di Arechi, an imposing medieval fortress that offers panoramic views of the city and the sea. Salerno is also home to several beaches, including the popular Marina di Vietri beach and the quieter Baia di Trentova. Make sure to plan in a relaxing beach day to soak up the sun and enjoy the local food and wine while you are at it. 

Sorrento

Sorrento is one of the quaint little towns to visit on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. It is known for its beautiful coastal views, stunning beaches, lemons and limoncello, and historic architecture. It is a popular tourist destination and offers a variety of activities such as boat tours, shopping, and dining. 

Getting to Sorrento

The best way to reach Sorrento is by taking a train to the Sorrento train station, which is located in the centre of the town. From the station, it is easy to walk to most of the popular tourist attractions and hotels. Alternatively, you can reach Sorrento by bus from other towns on the Amalfi Coast, such as Positano and Amalfi. You can also arrive by boat from the nearby port of Naples or Salerno, which is a scenic way to reach the town.

To get going, you can take a stroll along the beautiful marina and enjoy the view of the sea. You can then visit the Piazza Tasso, a lively square that is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. The town also features the Correale di Terranova Museum, which showcases the history of the area and the local art and is a great place for you if you want to take a dive into the town’s history. The museum also has a beautiful garden which is perfect for a stroll. For a taste of Sorrento’s local culture, visit the Sorrento Cathedral which is home to stunning frescoes and intricate mosaics. Also, a visit to the Basilica of St. Antoninus is a must.

Additionally, you can take a cooking class to learn how to prepare traditional Sorrento cuisine or take a guided walking tour to discover the town’s hidden gems. Sorrento is known for its beautiful views, and there are many bars and restaurants with terraces offering panoramic views of the sea and the town. Getting to Amalfi

Amalfi can be reached by car, bus or ferry. The nearest major airports are Naples and Salerno, both offering connecting transportation options to Amalfi.

Getting to Positano

To get to the town of Positano, the most popular option is to take the SITA bus from nearby towns such as Amalfi, Sorrento, or Naples. Alternatively, you can take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento and then transfer to a bus or take a taxi. Another option is to drive, but parking in Positano can be difficult. You can also take a ferry or private boat tour from nearby towns like Amalfi or Sorrento.

You can easily visit all that Positano has to offer in one day. Take a stroll along the town’s main beach, Spiaggia Grande, and soak in the stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. Visit the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, a beautiful church featuring a majolica tiled dome and a 13th-century Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary. You can also explore the town’s many boutiques and shops that sell handmade leather sandals, ceramics, and other local crafts. Take a boat tour to admire the coast from the sea and visit the nearby island of Li Galli, where legend has it that Ulysses encountered the sirens. 

You can visit the Villa Cimbrone, an elegant villa with beautiful gardens and panoramic terraces overlooking the sea. And if you just want to unwind, you can relax on one of the many beaches or beach clubs of the area and enjoy the crystal clear waters and the sun and enjoy a delicious meal at one of Positano’s many restaurants. You can also reach the town by boat from nearby coastal towns such as Amalfi or Positano. The nearest airport is Naples International Airport; from there, you can take a train to Salerno and then transfer to a bus or a boat to reach Maiori. It is important to note that parking in the town can be limited, so it is recommended to use public transportation or park in a designated parking area outside of the town centre.

You can explore the town’s historic centre and visit the local churches. One such church is the church of Santa Maria a Mare, built in the 12th century. It is known for its stunning mosaics and the beautiful bell tower. You can then visit the Castle of the Dukes of Amalfi, built in the 9th century; it offers panoramic views of the coast and the town, which is outstanding. Maiori is home to the beautiful Villa Comunale, a public park with gardens, playgrounds, and a panoramic terrace. Getting to Minori

You can reach Salerno from the Naples International airport via a train which takes about 2 hours, and the following bus ride takes 45 mins to reach Minori. You can rent a car from the airport, but be prepared for the winding and narrow roads.

The town is home to a number of ancient Roman ruins, including the Villa Romana, an ancient Roman villa with mosaics and frescoes. It dates back to the 1st century AD and is open to the public. You can also explore the historic centre, taking in the beautiful architecture of the town’s churches, such as the church of Santa Trofimena and the church of San Giovanni Battista. 

The town’s main beach, Marina di Minori, is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing. There are a number of other beaches in the area that are perfect for snorkelling and other water sports. You can take a boat tour of the coast, enjoying the stunning views of the sea and the surrounding cliffs. Minori is known for its delicious local cuisine, with a variety of seafood, pasta and pizza options. The town also has a number of shops and markets selling traditional ceramics and other crafts.

Ravello is a charming town known for its stunning gardens, beautiful villas and panoramic views of the sea. It’s an ideal place for you if you are looking for a peaceful and culturally rich holiday.

Getting to Ravello

The most popular way to reach Ravello is by car. The town is easily accessible via the A3 Autostrada (highway). If you are not driving, the best option is to take the train to Salerno and take the SITA bus or the local AMAF bus to Ravello. The journey takes around 30 minutes. You can take a ferry or hydrofoil to Amalfi and then take a bus or taxi to Ravello. From Amalfi, the bus ride takes around 20 minutes.

Top Things to do in Ravello

One of the top things to do in Ravello is to visit the Villa Rufolo. It is a 13th-century villa with a beautiful garden that offers breathtaking views of the sea. The villa is also known for hosting the Ravello Festival, an annual music festival that attracts visitors from all over the world. Another must-see attraction in Ravello is the Villa Cimbrone. This is a grand villa with an extensive garden featuring sculptures and terraces with panoramic views of the coast. 

You can also explore the town‘s many churches, such as the Cathedral of Ravello and the Church of Santa Maria a Gradillo. Ravello is also known for its ceramics and pottery. You can visit the many local workshops and purchase some unique and beautiful pieces. It is also a good place for foodies, as it has some great restaurants that serve delicious local cuisine. Atrani

Atrani Beach

Atrani is a picturesque coastal town located in the southern region of Campania. Known for its charming narrow streets, historic architecture and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. With a population of just over 1000 people, it is one of the smallest towns on the Amalfi Coast.

Getting to Atrani

If you’re driving from Naples, take the A3 motorway and exit at Castellammare di Stabia. From there, follow the SS145 to Amalfi and then take the SP41 to Atrani. The closest train station is in Salerno, which is about 10km from Atrani. From Salerno, you can take a bus or a ferry to Atrani. The SITA bus company runs a regular service from Salerno to Amalfi, with a stop in Atrani. Once you arrive in Atrani, you can easily explore the town on foot, as it’s small and compact.

Don’t let its small-town atmosphere fool you into thinking that there isn’t much to do in Atrani. You can visit the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, located in the centre of Atrani, which is known for its stunning frescoes and intricate mosaics and is a must-see for art and history enthusiasts. Atrani’s historic centre is a maze of narrow streets, colourful buildings, and charming squares. You can take a leisurely stroll around the town and discover its hidden gems. 

Atrani’s main beach is a small but beautiful stretch of sand. It’s a great place to relax and soak up the sun. Atrani is known for its delicious seafood and traditional Italian cuisine. You can experience some of the local dishes and enjoy a meal with a view at one of the town’s many restaurants. 

Hidden Gems on the Amalfi Coast

Cetara

Cetara is a small fishing village known for its picturesque waterfront, charming streets and delicious local cuisine. The town is particularly famous for its anchovies and traditional fish-based dishes. It is one of the towns to visit on the Amalfi Coast that should not be skipped by seafood lovers.

Getting to Cetara

Cetara can be reached by car, bus or train from Naples or Salerno. The nearest airport is Naples Capodichino, from there you can take a bus or train to Salerno and then another bus to Cetara. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Salerno to Cetara.

Top Things to do in Cetara

Take in the town’s history and culture by visiting the Church of Sant’Eustachio, the Torre Saracena, a medieval tower that offers panoramic views of the town and coast. You can explore the local restaurants and try out the famous anchovies and seafood dishes cooked with locally sourced ingredients and traditional recipes. You can also take a guided boat tour to explore the beautiful coastline and the nearby island of Capri. The town is also home to a beautiful public beach where you can relax and soak up the Mediterranean sun. 

Vietri Sul Mare

Vietri Sul Mare is a small town known for its picturesque waterfront and unique ceramics. The town is particularly famous for its ceramics which are hand-painted and inspired by the traditional motifs of the region. It is one of the towns to visit on the Amalfi Coast that should not be skipped by the art lovers. 

Getting to Vietri Sul Mare

Vietri Sul Mare can be reached by car, bus or train from Naples or Salerno. Alternatively, you can also take a ferry from Salerno to Vietri Sul Mare.

Top Things to do in Vietri Sul Mare

Ceramics is what Vietri Sul Mare is known for, so you can visit the local ceramic workshops and purchase these ceramics as souvenirs. You could even take a ceramics class to learn the traditional technique. Another must-see attraction is the beautiful Church of St. John the Baptist, a medieval church with a terrace offering panoramic views of the coast. You can also enjoy the coastline by going on a boat tour of the coast.

Conca dei Marini

Conca dei Marini is a small town known for its picturesque sea views, historic churches, and unique emerald grotto.

Getting to Conca dei Marini

The most popular way is by car, as the town is not easily accessible by public transportation. From Salerno, you can take the SS163 road and follow the signs for Amalfi. Once you reach Amalfi, follow the signs for Conca dei Marini. The drive is about 30 minutes. You can take a ferry from Amalfi to Conca dei Marini, which is a scenic way to reach the town, but it is not always available depending on the season.

Top Things to do in Conca dei Marini

The emerald grotto is a must-see attraction in Conca dei Marini. It’s a stunning underwater cave with a natural opening in the rock that allows light to filter in, illuminating the crystal-clear water in a beautiful emerald green. You can take a boat ride to the grotto and take a dip in the water. 

Conca dei Marini also has several historic churches, including the Church of Santa Maria a Conca and the Church of the Immaculate Conception. These churches offer a glimpse into the town’s rich history and culture. 

Being situated on a hilltop, Conca dei Marini offers beautiful sea views. You can take a walk along the coast and admire the colourful houses, the Mediterranean Sea and the rocky cliffs. The town is also known for its delicious seafood dishes, such as spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams) and zuppa di pesce (fish soup). Be sure to try some of the local specialities at one of the town’s seafood restaurants.

Praiano

Praiano is a charming coastal town known for its picturesque beaches, stunning coastal views, and traditional fishing village atmosphere. It is one of the towns to visit on the Amalfi Coast that should not be skipped if you’re looking for a quieter and more authentic experience.

Getting to Praiano

Praiano is well-connected to other towns on the Amalfi Coast by bus. The SITA bus company operates regular bus services between Praiano and other towns, such as Amalfi, Positano, and Sorrento. The bus ride can be quite winding and bumpy, but it’s a great way to see the spectacular coastal views. The nearest train station is located in Salerno, which is about 20 km from Praiano. From there you can take a bus to Praiano. If you’re driving to Praiano, you can take the A3 motorway and exit at Vietri sul Mare. From there, you can follow the SS163 road that winds along the coastline, passing through the towns of Amalfi and Positano before reaching Praiano.

Top Things to do in Praiano

There are many things to do in Praiano that will keep you busy throughout your stay. One of the most popular activities is to take a stroll along the town’s scenic coastal path, known as the “Sentiero degli Dei”, which offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Another highlight of Praiano is visiting the Church of San Luca Evangelista, which is a beautiful example of medieval architecture and is also home to a priceless fresco depicting the Madonna and Child. The town also offers a variety of beaches, such as Gavitella Beach, Marina di Praia Beach, and the famous Marina di Praia Beach, which is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the Amalfi Coast. You can also take a boat tour to explore the picturesque bays and inlets that dot the coastline. Praiano is also a great place for diving and snorkelling, as the waters here are crystal clear and teemed with marine life.

If you’re interested in local culture and history, you can visit the Marine Museum of Praiano, which tells the story of the town’s fishing heritage and displays a collection of traditional fishing boats and equipment. Lastly, for foodies, Praiano is known for its delicious seafood and traditional Italian cuisine, so be sure to try some of the local specialities at one of the town’s many restaurants.

Erchie is one of the small towns to visit on the Amalfi Coast. It is known for its stunning coastline and beautiful beaches and is a perfect destination for you if you are looking for a peaceful and quiet getaway.

Getting to Erchie

The best way to get there is by car, as the town is not easily accessible by public transportation. From Salerno, take the SS163 highway along the Amalfi Coast and exit at the Erchie exit. If you are coming from Naples, take the A3 highway and exit at Battipaglia, then take the SS18 and SS163 to Erchie. Alternatively, you can also take a bus from Salerno or other nearby towns, but the schedule may be limited, and the bus ride may be longer.

Top Things to do in Erchie

Along with all the peace and quiet, you can do a lot of things in Erchie. One main thing to do in Erchie is to visit the Chiesa di Santa Maria a Mare, an ancient church built in the 9th century. It is one of the main landmarks of the town. 

The beaches in Erchie are known for their crystal clear waters and are a great place to relax and soak up some sun, and go for a dip in the sea. Erchie is located near the Monti Lattari, a mountain range that offers great hiking trails for you to explore. And lastly, you can unwind by indulging in some of the locally made delicious seafood dishes, especially the fried calamari.

Furore is a small town known for its beautiful coastal views and charming atmosphere, also for its annual wine festival, “Sagra del Vino,” which is held every August. It is a small town, but it is very picturesque and perfect if you want to escape from the bustling tourist crowds.

Getting to Furore

The best way to reach Furore is by car. From Salerno, you can take the SS163 Amalfitana road and follow the signs for Furore. The drive takes about 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Salerno to Agerola and then a local bus or taxi to Furore.

You can start off by visiting the Fjord of Furore, a unique geological formation that is considered one of the most beautiful fjords in Italy. The fjord is a stunning sight to behold, with crystal-clear water and rugged cliffs. Another popular activity is hiking or trekking through the surrounding mountains, which offer breathtaking views of the coastline and the Amalfi Coast. You can also take a boat tour to explore the area’s many caves and grottoes or simply relax on one of the town’s many beaches. Additionally, Furore is home to several small, traditional fishing villages and numerous restaurants where you can try the delicious local cuisine.

Nerano

Nerano is a small town known for its picturesque beaches, crystal clear waters and traditional fishing village atmosphere. It is one of the towns to visit on the Amalfi Coast that should not be skipped by seafood lovers.

Getting to Nerano

One of the most convenient ways is to fly into Naples International Airport and then take a bus or train to Sorrento. From Sorrento, take a bus or taxi to Nerano. Alternatively, you can drive to Nerano, but be aware that parking can be difficult to find during peak season. 

Top Things to do in Nerano

One of the top things to do in Nerano is to take a boat tour along the coastline to see the beautiful Grotta dello Smeraldo, a sea cave with emerald green waters. You can also explore the charming fishing village, where they can sample local seafood and visit the local church, Santa Maria delle Grazie. The town also offers several hiking trails that lead to scenic viewpoints with panoramic views of the coast. Additionally, there are many excellent restaurants that serve delicious local cuisine and are also considered some of the best in the region that, offers a great place to relax and enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere.

Where to Stay in Amalfi Coast Without a Car?

While there are many beautiful towns to visit on the Amalfi Coast, there are just a few I recommend staying in, especially if you don’t have a car. Positano, Amalfi, Sorrento and Atrani are great towns to stay in.They are central and very well connected to the rest of the coast with ferries and local busses. If you’re on a budget, you could also consider setting up base in Salerno. It is situated right at the beginning of the coast and is well connected. You can easily get the ferry from here to all the towns on the coast. 

Another cute town you could stay in without a car is Vietri Sul Mare. But the town is situated on top of a hill. So make sure you’re prepared for a hike up to the city centre.
